What is the Atelier Mourlot?
Located in premises on rue de Chabrol, the Mourlot workshop was a family printing house bequeathed to Fernand Mourlot. After meeting an occasional publisher, Marcek Seher, the family print shop grew into a printing house specialised in creating lithographs. The quality of Mourlot's work enabled him to build relationships with many artists, poets and writers beyond national borders, which earned him the title of first master lithographic printer at Mourlot.
Fernand Mourlot thus gave the art of lithography a place within contemporary art. The greatest artists of the 20th century, including Georges Braques, Bernard Buffet, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Léonard Foujita, Henri Matisse, Roger Muhl, Pablo Picasso, and many others such as Alexander Calder, Jean Cocteau or Joan Miro, Fernand Léger collaborated with Mourlot to produce their original lithographs.
What is the difference between a lithograph and a screen print?
Both are printing techniques, but the difference lies in the process. A lithograph reproduces or creates a drawing executed in ink or crayon on a limestone slab. To produce a screen print, by contrast, the artist uses stencils placed between the ink and the support.
You will find explanations of the different printmaking techniques on our website, on the lithography explained page.
