Certified work
In this ink drawing dated 1970, Louis Fabien offers a majestic view of Florence, dominated by the famous Ponte Vecchio and the towers of the historic city. Made in a rigorous and mastered style, this composition finely illustrates the artist's talent for architecture and perspective. The work of the trait — hashish, regular, thorough — gives the landscape an almost engraved structure, where the light emerges contrasts cleverly dotted between shadows and areas left blank. Signed and dated at the bottom right, this drawing was made for the work Beauty of Europe, paying a precise tribute to the italian urban splendor.
Louis Fabien, better known for his pointillist painting and intimate scenes, demonstrates here another aspect of his know-how, rooted in the tradition of observation drawing. His gaze on Florence is both admiring and analytical, sobriety restoring the elegance of his lines, the nobility of his building, and the historical density that emerges from it. This large-format paper drawing is not just about representing a place: it invites us to a silent contemplation, to the rediscovery of this city of art and memory, with the rigour of an architect and the sensitivity of a poet.
