Description
With his stripping humour and his free technique, PAZBLANDINA here diverts the codes of popular imagery to project them into the universe of social criticism. On this one-dollar note, Lucky Luke, a lonely and incorruptible hero of the American West, takes a stand in a wooden bathtub, brushed by hand, while his faithful (but beneficent) companion Rantanplan observes the scene, as suspended from a logic that escapes him. The tone is set: that of the shift, of the irony and of a sweet subversion.
PAZBLANDINA manipulate the paradox here with brilliance. The image of the righteous cowboy is reduced to a trivial, almost domestic form of humanity. This Lucky Luke is no longer the man who shoots faster than his shadow, but an unarmed antihero, embodying idleness in a world saturated with productivity. And what support more symbolic than the banknote — this universal totem of value — to carry this staging? The silver becomes here the theatre of derision, surface of graphic freedom where the fall of icons replays.
Through this work, the artist is not content to revisit the comic book: he takes a tender but incisive look at the consumer society, its cultural idols, and this strange way of capitalizing everything — including our childhood memories. A spiritful, playful and critical work that perfectly embodies the committed pop aesthetic of PAZBLANDINA.
