In this original drawing signed Tony Agostini, we find all the sensitivity of the artist to capture the soul of a place. Made in ink on paper in format 32,4 x 25 this work is part of the famous series Beautys of Europe (painters witnesses of their time), bringing together artists' visions of the landscapes and symbols of the continent. Here, Agostini plunges the spectator into the intimacy of a canal with its rolling reflections, most likely located in the Netherlands, as the architectures narrow with sharp gables and the crumbled windows recall the facades of Amsterdam. The scene, nocturnal or immersed in a grey day, gives rise to a poetic and silent atmosphere. The still boat in the centre of the drawing anchors the gaze and evokes suspended time, almost melancholy.
A painter of Corsican origin, Tony Agostini (1916-1990) was a great lover of urban landscapes, theatre scenes and allusive compositions. Its lively and intuitive trait, put at the service of the cleverly contrasted ink wash, gives the whole a very special vibration. In this work, we feel a subtle balance between figuration and suggestion: the trembling reflections in the water, the almost luminous white touches on the facades, the sky that weighs on the city... all this makes up an almost unreal moment, as frozen in the memory of the traveller. This work is a strong part of the French tradition of 20th century travellers painters, and also recalls with certain accents the graphic universe of Maurice Utrillo or Nicolas de Staël in his research of structure and mass.
