Description

Louis Toffoli, "Sur le marché": an original oil on canvas

With "Sur le marché," Louis Toffoli (1907-1999) captures a scene of daily life: a vendor, seated on a small wooden stool, awaits customers amidst his goods. Blue cap, yellow shirt with rolled-up sleeves, green pants, the man leans slightly forward, one elbow resting on his knee, the other arm extended towards his merchandise. As often in the painter's work, the face remains featureless: reduced to a simple plane of warm color, it gives the figure a presence both humble and universal.

A composition built by planes

The painting is organized around the seated figure, inscribed in a diagonal descending from the face to the crate at his feet. In the foreground, the box of orange fruits, a large light bowl, a small basket, and a bunch of pale vegetables compose a true still life, treated with the same attention as the character. In the background, the ochre and olive backdrop, punctuated with vertical blue strokes, evokes the awning or stall canvases without ever describing them.

Material and color

Toffoli deploys a palette dominated by ochres, greens, and yellows, enlivened by the orange of the fruits and the blue of the cap. The forms, simplified and outlined with dark lines, are cut into clear planes of post-cubist inspiration; the paint, applied in bold strokes, reveals the canvas's texture in places. The drawing remains highly economical: a few lines suffice to establish the body's weight, the arm's tension, the stool's stability. This encapsulates the essence of Toffoli's art: a synthetic figuration, heir to the Italian tradition, where color constructs form and the most ordinary subject achieves true monumentality.

The world of work in Louis Toffoli's oeuvre

Born in Trieste and settled in France, Louis Toffoli devoted most of his work to the human figure and everyday gestures: peasants, fishermen, carriers, artisans, and vendors. Without picturesque or anecdote, he renders them as grave and dignified figures, built like architectures. "Sur le marché" fully belongs to this vein and offers the collector an original painting characteristic of the artist's style.
