Maurice Estève, Colorist of the New École de Paris

Maurice Estève, born on May 2, 1904, in Culan, Cher, and passed away in the same town on June 29, 2001, was a French painter, one of the great colorists of the New École de Paris. Self-taught, he developed after the war a non-figurative painting style characterized by interwoven forms with almost organic qualities.

Color Above All

Estève's canvases, watercolors, collages, and lithographs are distinguished by an intense and warm palette, where forms fit together like a stained glass window. A museum dedicated to him is located in Bourges, at the Hôtel des Échevins.
