KANDINSKY Vassily
Biography of Vassily Kandinsky
Vassily Kandinsky was born on 16 December 1866 in Moscow. Born from an easy environment, he spent his childhood in Odessa, where he studied music and drawing. First trained in law and economics at Moscow University, he obtained a professorship before leaving everything at the age of 30 to devote himself to painting. He then moved to Munich and pursued his artistic studies with determination.
In 1911 he co-founded with Franz Marc the Der Blaue Reiter group (The Blue Cavalier), which aims to promote a new artistic expression, spiritual and free from any academic constraint. After returning to Russia during the war, he joined the Bauhaus in 1922 in Germany, where he taught until its closure in 1933. He then moved to France and obtained French nationality in 1939.
Artistic career
Kandinsky is one of the pioneers of abstraction. His work quickly evolves from figurative to a painting completely free from any representation. He seeks to translate inner emotions and forces through colour and form. In his famous series of Compositions, Improvements and Impressions, it explores the expressive potential of lines, rhythms and chromatic contrasts.
Along with his practice, Kandinsky develops a theoretical reflection on art. He published in 1911 Spiritual in Art, a founding manifesto of abstraction, and in 1926 Point and line on plan, where he exposes his vision of art as a universal visual language.
Style and influences
Very influenced by music, Kandinsky seeks to create visual harmonies. It often combines colors and sounds, developing a form of synesthesia. His painting dialogues geometric shapes, fluid curves and dynamic lines. He is also nourished by theosophy and Oriental spiritualitys, which he integrates into his symbolic and intuitive approach.
His style goes from colorful expressionism to a more structured abstraction, especially during his period at Bauhaus, where he deepens his research on the balance of forms and visual tension.
Distinction and recognition
Vassily Kandinsky is now recognized as one of the great masters of art of the twentieth century. His works are present in the world's largest museums and continue to influence artists and thinkers. He has marked history with his theoretical as well as pictorial contribution, and his name remains inseparable from the birth of modern abstract art.
