Jean Picart Le Doux, Painter-Cartoonist of Modern Tapestry

Jean Picart Le Doux (1902-1982) was a French painter, engraver, and painter-cartoonist, a major figure in the tapestry revival of the 20th century, alongside Jean Lurçat.

The Tapestry Revival

Born in Paris on January 31, 1902, son of the painter Charles Picart Le Doux, Jean Picart Le Doux began as a graphic designer and poster artist. His encounter with Jean Lurçat led him to tapestry: he designed numerous cartoons woven in Aubusson, filled with birds, suns, foliage, and symbolic figures, in a luminous palette. As a painter and lithographer, he transposed this decorative and poetic universe into his prints.
