Alain Bonnefoit, the Female Form in a Single Stroke

The female nude is at the heart of Alain Bonnefoit's work. His reclining women, seated at the edge of a bed or draped in colorful fabric, emerge from a continuous, swift, and assured line reminiscent of the Japanese art of sumi-e, ink painting, which deeply inspired him. His original lithographs offer a particularly faithful translation of this style.

From Montmartre to Tuscany

Born in 1937 in Montmartre, Alain Bonnefoit studied at the École des Arts Appliqués and then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He then moved to Brussels, where he attended the engraving and sculpture sections of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Back in Paris, he worked from 1961 to 1963 in the studio of sculptor Antoniucci Volti, a great interpreter of the female form.

However, painting became his preferred mode of expression. His move to Tuscany played a decisive role: there, he discovered the light and Italian landscapes, which, along with the nude, became the two poles of his work. From the late 1990s, he also explored mixed techniques and created large formats on reclaimed materials, paper, or burlap. His works have notably entered the collections of the Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art in Saint Petersburg.

The Charm of a Bonnefoit Print

  • A unique and continuous line, inherited from sumi-e, capturing the pose with great economy of means.
  • Accents of color, blue or red drapery, structuring the composition.
  • An elegant sensuality, never overstated, that suits any interior.
