Biography of André Bourrié

André Bourrié was an official painter of the French Navy, ceramist, and lithographer, born in 1936 in Montpellier and died in 2017 in Marseille. He was known for his great mastery of pointillist landscapes.

Story of the artist André Bourrié

Before achieving the worldwide recognition he is known for, André Bourrié had a rich yet unconventional life. After being abandoned by his father at the age of 9 and losing his mother when he was 13, he wandered for a few months until his uncle took him in and placed him in an orphanage where he learned the trade of a construction worker. Despite this, he was drawn to painting and started by painting scenes from his daily life, rooftops of Paris, construction sites, cranes, and scaffolding. His painting was influenced by these vertical subjects.

After the war, he became a ceramics teacher and earned the title of best craftsman in France. He left this profession to fully pursue his painting and depicted coastal landscapes, portraying the French Riviera, Brittany, Vendée, and Languedoc.

In his works, water is almost always present, which earned him the title of official painter of the French Navy in 1983, alongside Jean Bouyssou. André Bourrié is recognized for his pointillist and neo-impressionist works.
