From Montbéliard to Paris
Son of a Montbéliard watchmaker, Jules-Émile Zingg drew from childhood and initially studied watchmaking design. As a scholarship recipient, he entered the Beaux-Arts in Besançon, then in Paris, in Fernand Cormon's studio. Second Prix de Rome, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, then, after World War I, at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne, in a more modern style. In Perros-Guirec, he met Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier.
The Painter of Rural Life
Plowing, harvests, oxen teams, snow-covered villages, autumn paths: Zingg painted the countryside with great structural strength, simplified forms, and a dense palette. He also designed tapestry cartoons for Aubusson and the Gobelins and practiced fresco, notably at La Coupole. His works are preserved at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, in Besançon, Pontarlier, or Cosne-sur-Loire, and retrospectives have been dedicated to him in Pont-Aven and the Musée Bourdelle.
