Biography of Michael Halsband

Michael Halsband was born in 1956 in New York. He was passionate about photography at an early age and trained at the School of Visual Arts, where he graduated in 1980. Very quickly, he established himself as one of the most prominent portraitists of his generation, capturing with finesse and sobriety the great figures of the international cultural, artistic and musical scene.

Career and strengths

Halsband became famous thanks to his portraits of celebrities such as Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mick Jagger and Iggy Pop. He accompanied the Rolling Stones on tour in 1981 and made iconic photographs. He also works for major fashion brands, signs strong visual campaigns and devotes himself to personal projects combining photography, surfing and documentary.

Style and influences

Michael Halsband develops a direct style, without artifice, centered on the authenticity of the subject. His gaze recalls that of Irving Penn or Richard Avedon: precise, clean, deeply human. He often works in black and white, on imposing formats such as 8x10, to capture every detail and every expression with intensity.

Michael Halsband's work is exposed in many institutions around the world. It enjoys lasting recognition, both in photography and in the cultural spheres where art, music and fashion intersect.
