Hiroshi Asada, a Kyoto Engraver in Paris
Born in 1931 in Kyoto, Hiroshi Asada grew up in a family of painters: his father, Asada Benji, and his brother, Asada Takashi, practiced nihonga, traditional Japanese painting. He chose oil painting and exhibited from 1954 with the Shinseisaku association, which recognized him in the late 1960s.
In 1971, he moved to Paris and learned copper engraving in the studio of Johnny Friedlaender, one of the great masters of color etching. His French years were fruitful: international prize at the International Painting Festival of Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1974, election to the Salon d'Automne, and distinction in the copper engraving section of the Cannes International Print Biennale in 1977.
Returning to Japan in 1982, he taught at the Kyoto City University of Arts and received several honors, including the title of cultural personality of Kyoto in 1995. He passed away in 1997. Between figuration and abstraction, his engraved work is distinguished by the sobriety of its compositions, the balance of forms, and an atmosphere conducive to contemplation.
