Paul-Émile Colin, Engraver from Lorraine of the Pont-Aven School

Paul-Émile Colin was born on August 16, 1867, in Lunéville, Lorraine, and died in October 1949 in Bourg-la-Reine. A trained physician, passionate about drawing since childhood, he is one of the renovators of original wood engraving in France.

Pont-Aven and Wood Engraving

A friend of Charles Filiger, he joined Paul Gauguin in Pont-Aven in the summer of 1890, and his works from the 1890s bear the mark of the innovations of the Pont-Aven school. From 1893, he developed knife engraving on end-grain wood. Settled in Lagny in 1894 as a physician, he permanently abandoned medicine for art in 1901. A founding member of the Société de la gravure sur bois originale in 1911, he served as its vice-president from 1920 to 1935.

Illustrator and Traveler

Colin illustrated numerous works, including "Les Philippe" by Jules Renard, "La Terre et l'Homme" by Anatole France, and "La Colline inspirée" by Maurice Barrès. Faithful to his Lorraine origins, he painted its landscapes and villages. After 1920, his travels to Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco renewed his approach to color.
