Jacques Lagrange, French painter and artist of the 20th century

Jacques Lagrange (1917-1995) is a French painter, engraver, and artist whose work holds a unique place in 20th-century figurative art. Trained at the École nationale supérieure des Arts décoratifs in Paris, he gradually developed a personal language characterized by the simplification of forms, the construction of space, and the importance given to color. His work evolved towards a purified figuration, sometimes close to abstraction, in which landscapes, architectures, characters, and scenes of daily life are reinterpreted with great freedom.

An artist with multiple collaborations

Jacques Lagrange actively participated in the French art scene after the war and maintained relationships with several major figures of his time. A painter but also an engraver, lithographer, and decorator, he worked in various fields of graphic and decorative arts. He is particularly known for his collaboration with Jacques Tati, for whom he contributed to the visual development and writing of several films, including Mon Oncle, Playtime, and Trafic. This closeness to cinema reflects his interest in composition, architecture, perspectives, and the observation of modern society, also perceptible in his pictorial work.
