Description
With Urban Karma, Speedy Graphito delivers a work of striking graphic intensity, where pop culture, street art and a form of contemporary spirituality meet. Made on precious Hanji paper, this unique piece combines the free pictorial gesture of acrylic with the precision of screenprinting, in a centrally symmetrical composition that evokes both Oriental mandalas and urban totemic figures. The eye is drawn to the masked female figure, crowned by a yin-yang symbol, which embodies the balance between the forces of chaos and harmony, of graffiti and high culture.
Speedy Graphito, a pioneer of the street art movement in France since the 1980s, reminds us here of how deeply his universe is nourished by collective icons – from Disney to Astro Boy, from video games to sacred art – which he diverts with critical delight. Spray cans, diamonds, animal figures and floral motifs are arranged with rigour but treated with deliberate spontaneity, where the acrylic drips add raw energy to the whole. Urban Karma is a work that mirrors our age: saturated with signs, joyfully irreverent, yet also imbued with a desire for visual and symbolic unity. A work that is both explosive and meditative, fully embodying the inimitable visual signature of Speedy Graphito.
