Description

In 1968, Bernard Buffet delivered with My circus, the clown in the red background a striking image, both theatrical and deeply introspective. This original lithograph on vellum paper, measuring 74 x 56 cm, is hand-numbered and signed by the artist. It is listed in the catalogue raisonné under number 139, a key element for precisely situating the work within Buffet's graphic corpus.

The theme of the circus occupies a major place in Bernard Buffet's production in the late 1960s. Fascinated by the world of acrobats, the artist projects his own vision of the world, austere, tense, sometimes melancholic. The clown, the central figure in this composition, is never treated as a mere entertainment character. Beneath the makeup and costume, Buffet reveals an almost existential solitude.

The red background, intense, vibrant, acts as a dramatic stage. It is not a decorative red, but a structuring red that envelops the character and accentuates the verticality so characteristic of Buffet's line. The black lines, incisive, almost sharp, cut the silhouette with rigor. The elongated face, with emphasized eyes, carries this ambiguous expression, between distance and gravity, an immediate signature of the artist.

Technically, the lithograph perfectly translates Bernard Buffet's graphic mastery. The drawing retains its original tension, without any loss of intensity. The contrast between the red surface and the black linear construction creates a remarkable visual depth. The 74 x 56 cm format gives the work a strong presence.

The year 1968 marks a period of artistic maturity for Buffet. Already internationally recognized, he consistently continues his exploration of human figures, urban landscapes, and symbolic themes. The circus then becomes an inner theater, a mirror of the human condition. This work is a particularly accomplished demonstration of that.
