Description
In Portrait of Annabel Buffet (Circa 1979), Bernard Buffet delivers a poignant and clean interpretation of his wife, capturing both her melancholy and her inner strength. True to its recognizable style, the artist uses angular and tense lines to sculpt the features of Annabel, offering a composition where the sobriety of the trait contrasts with the intensity of the expression. The disproportionate eyes, surrounded by black, seem to fix a point beyond the visible, reflecting an unfathomable soul depth.
The contrast between the intense blackness of the hair and the whiteness of the paper gives the whole a striking graphic dimension, accentuated by the absence of background which isolate the face in a kind of timeless silence. This artist's test, signed with Buffet's hand, testifies to an almost ascetic approach to the portrait, where each line seems carefully weighed to restore the very essence of the model. Through this work, Bernard Buffet celebrates not only love but also the deep admiration he brings to Annabel, transforming his image into an austere and touching icon, marked by the gravity and purity of his art.
