Description

At Raymond Moretti's, the line never stands still. Born in Nice in 1931, a friend of Picasso and Cocteau, this draughtsman of rare freedom has drawn on mythology, jazz, the Bible and contemporary history for his work, right up to the scale of the Monstre, his monumental sculpture at La Défense. His hand is recognisable by its nervous, rapid line, which conjures a face or a silhouette in a few strokes.

Published in Paris in 1988 by Armand and Georges Israël, Raymond Moretti illustre Malraux is a large-scale demonstration of this. The cover, in a velvety midnight blue, bears a composition blind-stamped and picked out in white on the slipcase: Malraux, in a long double-breasted coat and tousled hair, emerges from the shadows, while a procession of faces unfolds diagonally beneath his feet. On the spine, the title is stamped in gold. Inside, eight original colour lithographs, one across four fold-out pages, engage in dialogue with twelve drawings reproduced in black and with texts by Malraux, Jean Lescure, Pierre Lefranc, Antoine Terrasse and Olivier Germain-Thomas, under a preface by Jacques Chaban-Delmas.

The edition is limited to 1,090 numbered copies on Lana vellum, and this one bears the number 2. A fine artist's book in an imposing format (46 x 35 cm), showing the full extent of Moretti's talent in lithography. The work comes with a certificate, is shipped quickly and insured, and can be ordered online from Galerie 125.
