Description
In The lake, Bernard Gantner gives us a striking view of the mountain landscape, where time seems suspended between fog and clarity. True to his style of softness and subtlety, the artist captures with extreme finesse the silent breath of nature. The lake, nestled in the hollow mountains, becomes a spectral mirror, reflecting the veiled sky and surrounding reliefs in a felted atmosphere.
The use of black and white gives this lithography a dramatic intensity. The contrasts between deep shadow zones and more diaphanous touches create an enveloping, almost meditative atmosphere. Each trait, each shade seems to faint in a poetic mist, where matter dissolves to leave room only for suggestion. The viewer's eye is drawn to the foreground, where a few solitary dwellings testify to a discreet human presence, almost erased by the vastness of the landscape.
Gantner is part of the tradition of the great painters of the atmosphere, recalling the subtleties of romantic engravings or Turner's landscapes in their luminous evaporation. The lake is an ode to contemplation, an invitation to be lost in the infinite elements and to listen to the silence of nature.
