Description
In this lithography entitled "The Portuguese" (1971), Paul Collomb pays tribute to the discreet dignity of a woman of the people, seized in a moment of pause or waiting. Made on vellum paper in format 32 x 25 cm, signed in the board, numbered and countersigned by hand, the work impresses by the expressive force of his drawing with the charcoal. A direct, almost rough trait, the artist captures the curved posture, the active hands, the deep and silent look of this woman protected by a large umbrella. The economy of means, the simplicity of the decor, reinforces the power of the subject.
True to his social sensitivity and admiration for the rural and labour world, Collomb does not seek idealization or picturesqueness. He correctly draws a female figure with courage and resilience. The umbrella, disproportionate, becomes a symbolic, almost protective element, which houses not only the body but a whole life marked by labor and tenacity. As is often the case with Paul Collomb, humanity is at the heart of the matter. This work is part of the tradition of the great humanist cartoonists of the twentieth century, where the trait is at the service of emotion, reality, respect. Portuguese is much more than a scene: it is a portrait of silent dignity.
