Description
In this lithography of Blasco Mentor Sun on Europe (1971), the catalan artist delivers both dreamlike and telluric composition, where raw energy seems to emanate from the heart of the earth. Made on vellum paper in the format of 32 x 25 cm, the work is signed in the board, then numbered and countersigned by hand. In the centre of the stage, powerful reptilian creatures decorated with motifs evoking primitive tattoos twist under an immense luminous whirlwind, both solar and cosmic. The title, poetic and symbolic, announces a cataclysm or regeneration.
Blasco Mentor excels here in the art of contrast: moving shapes and powerful masses, luminous vortex and surrounding darkness create a striking visual tension. In this work we find the artist's taste for matter, for the fantastic carnal, but also a broader reflection on the human condition and the forces that go through history. Sun on Europe is not an illustrative scene, but a metaphorical vision: that of a continent worked by deep forces, animal, mythological. Nervous graphic writing, powerful modeling and spiral rhythm make this lithography a dense, enigmatic and intense work. Mentor, faithful to his surrealist and baroque vein, mixes here instinct, memory and light in an unforgettable composition.
