Description

In this lithography entitled "Vue sur ville" (1970), Michel Ciry unfolds all the finesse of his trait to transcribe a serene and meticulously observed urban scene. Made on vellum paper in the format of 32 x 25 cm, signed in the plank then countersigned by hand, the work takes us to the threshold of a village or a suburb, facing a city in overhang dominated by domes, bell towers and tight roofs. The look crosses the first houses with irregular stone walls, along a wasteland, before being caught by the architectural density of the old center.

Ciry, faithful to her meticulous approach, makes every stone, every tile, every bush with almost calligraphic precision. The composition, in balance between natural and built, between empty and full, invites contemplation. Nothing is supported, nothing is demonstrative, but everything is there: the dry light of the south, the memory of the place, the suspended silence. We think of some Italian or Spanish views, where centuries seem superimposed. This drawing, of great sobriety, echoes the spirituality of the artist—writer, painter and engraver—whose work bears witness to a constant quest for order, truth and harmony. City view this is in keeping with the tradition of great humanist cartoonists, where architecture becomes a sensitive language, serving a manned look.
