In The bridge, Jean Couty again deploys all his talent to synthesize architecture and emotion in a clean graphic writing. This lithography, dated 1971, seems to capture a suspended moment where the bridge – a recurring motif in art history – becomes much more than just a functional structure: a link between the shores, between the past and the present, between the human and the sacred. Jean Couty, emblematic figure of Lyon painting, has always been able to reconcile plastic rigour with spiritual intensity. In this work, as in many of his drawings or paintings, the artist offers us a structured but never frozen world view. The bridge becomes a symbol of passage, hope, and perhaps even elevation.
