Description
In this over-yearly lithography, Louis Berthommé-Saint-André captures a moment of suspended intimacy, full of sweet melancholy. A woman is dormant, stunned in a style armchair, fan in her hand, head gently leaning. The trait is free, almost sketched, but of remarkable expressive vivacity, capturing the lightness of a fabric, the swelling of a dress, the glistening of a corset. The choice of the monochrome sepia strengthens the felted and nostalgic atmosphere, as if the image arose from a memory or a past dream.
Berthommé-Saint-André, known for his taste of intimate scenes and female figures imprinted with grace, is part of the line of sensitive illustrators of the twentieth century. Here, it is not so much a portrait as a state of soul: that of a suspended time, of a quiet abandonment. The pictorial gesture remains fluid, almost musical, avoiding any overload to let the silences of the drawing vibrate better. The work evokes the Parisian salons, the paintings of Vuillard or some pastels of Degas, in a gentle and controlled evocation of the feminine at rest. A piece in restraint, at the same time simple and precious, that bears witness to the tender and subtle look that the artist placed on his models and on his time.
