Description
In this lithography entitled Progress on Aerodynamics (1970), André Fougeron deployed a plastic language at the frontiers of abstraction and figurativeness, in a composition structured around the line and contrast. On a bright yellow background, two shapes face each other: on the left, a vegetal or mineral silhouette woven with tight hatcheries; on the right, a stylized profile, with soft and geometrized volumes, evoking an idealized human figure. The whole vibrates a silent dialogue between organic matter and rational form, between nature and science. This drawing, numbered, signed in the board and countersigned by hand, affirms Fougeron's graphic mastery, well beyond his realistic-socialist period.
Under an almost decorative appearance, the work takes a deep look at the notion of progress — a central theme in the second half of the twentieth century. The contrast between the rigid linear pattern and the bright background creates a visual tension that immediately captures the look. Fougeron introduces a subtle game between symbolism and stylization, where the face becomes metaphor of modernity, scientific momentum, but also of human fragility in the face of his own inventions. This lithography is distinguished by its visual density as well as its intellectual scope, recalling how Fougeron was also a form researcher, an image thinker, engaged in the aesthetic and ideological changes of his time.
