Description
In this painting Bouquet of poppies on sea bottom, Michel Henry brilliantly unfolds all the richness of his palette and his consummated art of floral composition. The vase literally overflows with bright, orange red poppies, carried by fine and vibrant stems. But here, still life is everything but frozen: it dialogues with a coastal landscape where the masts of the sailboats stand as a vertical resonance to the stems of the flowers, and where the sky charged with pastel nuances prolongs the sensuality of the bouquet. The ensemble bathe in a pink-lilas light that seems filtered by the very emotion of the painter.
Faithful to its generous and hedonistic aesthetic, Michel Henry sublimates nature by making it dialogue with the transfigured daily. Painter of the joy of living, he claims a modern, colorful, luminous figure. The bouquet, a recurring motif in his work, becomes here a pretext for pictorial exuberance as well as harmony. The sea floor, sketched with delicacy, inscribed the whole in a real place while opening to the dreaming. Bouquet of poppies on sea bottom is a celebration of life, a moment suspended between land and sea, flowers and light, daily and eternity. A work that captures as much attention as it soothes.
