Michel-Henry, the Painter of Bouquets Before Landscapes
Michel-Henry (1928-2016) was a French painter and lithographer renowned for his bouquets of flowers set against landscapes. This distinctive composition, which combines in a single image a still life in the foreground and a landscape, often Venice, Paris, or the sea, in the background, made him one of the most admired flower painters of his generation.
A Recognizable Composition
Born in Langres, Haute-Marne, on September 1, 1928, Michel Henry entered the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris, where he became the head assistant in Roger Chapelain-Midy's studio. A resident of the Maison Descartes in Amsterdam in 1956, he was awarded the Casa de Velázquez prize in 1957-1958. His still lifes, bouquets, and landscapes earned him wide recognition. He was appointed president of the Salon d'Automne in 1983, then founded the Rencontre d'art contemporain de Calvi in 1996. He passed away in Paris on December 25, 2016, and is buried in Langres.
