Description
With Data General 2000, Peter Max delivers an enigmatic and bold work, mixing the rigor of a masculine silhouette with explosive and colorful graphics that makes his fame. Born from the pop art current, close to Roy Lichtenstein or James Rosenquist, Max is unique in his way of infusing his compositions with a psychedelic energy borrowed from the 1960s and 1970s. This screen printing is a perfect demonstration: uniform blue-grey background, body structured by vermilion red and black flats, floating objects in levitation... everything helps create a scene both surreal and ultra contemporary.
The faceless man, immobile, almost hieratic, recalls Magritte's anonymous figures (The Son of Man) or the stylized silhouettes of Julian Opie. Around it gravitate ambiguous elements – berets, sausages, suspended masses – like broken icons of a collective imagination reviewed under LSD. The graphic approach also evokes the aesthetics of modernist advertisements of the 1950s, revisited here by an ironic and lucid eye. Peter Max, whose works accompanied the American countercultures and dressed the campaigns for peace, pays tribute here to the power of the staggered image, of the pop icon, of the multiplied symbol.
Visually strong work, Data General 2000 finds its place between the colorful optimism of pop art and the latent criticism of standard societies, and lies in the line of artists who have been able to mix figurative abstraction and graphic explosion: Robert Indiana, Erró, Eduardo Paolozzi or Valerio Adami.
