Description
This lithograph Portrait Feu (1990) by Robert Combas powerfully embodies the artist's exuberant and radical universe, that of a leading figure of the Figuration Libre movement. The composition is dominated by a frontal face drawn in vivid red, with deliberately exaggerated, almost incandescent features. The wide eyes, the insistent smile and the bristling hair form a figure that is both primitive and expressive, charged with raw energy. The drawing, nervous and instinctive, asserts the immediacy characteristic of Combas's work. The face is overrun by a multitude of handwritten inscriptions: phrases, crossed-out words and annotations blending humour, provocation and references to everyday life. These textual elements, sometimes legible, sometimes deliberately obscured, intertwine with the drawing and fully participate in the composition. Erasures, overlaid marks and superimpositions create a visual saturation that evokes a stream of thought set directly onto the paper, where writing and drawing merge. Executed as an original lithograph on vélin paper, this 71 x 50 cm work, numbered and signed in pencil by the artist, stands out for its graphic power and expressive intensity. The unfolded copy fully preserves the legibility of the details and the strength of the line. Portrait Feu stands as an emblematic testimony to Robert Combas's work at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, a period marked by an uncompromising exploration of identity, the body, language and popular culture.
