Description
Here the pencil and charcoal work without restraint, on a cream paper whose warm tone and visible grain contribute to the effect. Portrait de femme shows a full-length standing figure, one hand resting on the hip, the calm face turned towards us. The diagonal hatching that darkens the background contrasts with the long, faint lines of the dress, left almost at the stage of outline. A discreet bluish highlight on the bodice alone breaks the greyness.
The interest of the sheet lies in its character as a work in progress. A frame drawn with a ruler surrounds the figure, an armchair is only barely suggested, while a small vignette in the upper right reprises the pose in reduced form. On the left, a few handwritten lines, barely legible, bear witness to a hand that notes down as it draws. The assured line of the Nancy-born portraitist Henri-Paul Royer (1869-1938), winner of the Salon prize in 1898, is recognisable here, and his preparatory drawings convey the liveliness of his gaze.
This drawing, measuring 63 x 47 cm, is signed lower right and shows slight defects at the edges. It will appeal to collectors drawn to the Belle Époque as well as to enthusiasts of Lorraine art. The work is certified. It will reach you in careful packaging, with shipment tracking until delivery. Galerie 125 remains at your disposal for any questions.
