Born on January 22, 1869 in Nancy and died on October 31, 1938 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Henri Paul Royer was a French painter known for his talent in portrait, landscape and genre painting. The son of Jules Royer, founder of an important lithographic printing company, he was raised in a stimulating artistic environment. History of Henri Paul Royer

After returning from the Netherlands, Royer enrolled at the Julian Academy in Paris, where he was the pupil of Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. His work "Le Vagabond", presented at the Salon in 1890, marked the beginning of his success, followed by the Lehmann Prize for "Scene of the Life of Bacchus" in 1892. In 1898 Paul Henri Royer had a remarkable success in winning the prestigious Salon Prize, accompanied by a prize of 10,000 francs, for his work "L'Ex-voto". That same year, he was also honoured with a gold medal at the exhibition of fine arts, celebrating the Jubilee of Emperor Francis Joseph in Vienna. His painting "L'Ex-voto", as well as other works such as "In Flanders in the evening", also contributed to his silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. Appointed knight of the Legion of Honour in 1900, he also led the female workshop of the Julian Academy. His service during the First World War, notably in the 41st Infantry Regiment and the 1st Engineer Regiment camouflage section, was honoured with several distinctions.

Henri Paul Royer and the École de Nancy

The influence of the École de Nancy on Royer's work is undeniable. Although its style is distinct, the principles of Art Nouveau and Nancy's artistic atmosphere have profoundly marked its approach. His interest in everyday life, rural and urban scenes, and his masterful use of light and shadow, reflect the spirit of this school. His trip to Brittany in 1896 also influenced his work, making him discover a new source of inspiration in the landscapes and inhabitants of this region.
