Lucien Fontanarosa, Figure and Light

Lucien Fontanarosa (1912-1975) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. Trained at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris, he won the first grand prix de Rome in painting in 1936 and is part of the great French figurative tradition of the 20th century.

A Sensitive Figuration

Focused on the human figure, his work combines the solidity of drawing, inherited from a demanding academic training, with a soft and introspective atmosphere, where light delicately shapes forms. It dialogues with that of painters devoted to drawing like Yves Brayer or Jean Souverbie. Fontanarosa also illustrated numerous books and created set designs.
