Édouard Goerg, Expressionist and Master Engraver
Édouard Goerg (1893-1969), born in Sydney to French parents, was a painter, engraver, and lithographer, one of the prominent figures of French Expressionism. His work, often tinged with satire and irony, questions societal flaws with incisive drawing and quintessential French elegance.
A Lucid View of His Time
Trained in Paris, Goerg quickly turned to engraving and lithography, which enhanced the power of his line. Human figures with expressive postures and gazes, flower-women, witches, and street scenes create a universe both poetic and critical, rendered with dense blacks and intense contrasts.
A Great Teacher
As a professor of engraving at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Goerg trained numerous artists, including Mario Avati, Paul Ambille, and Arnaud d'Hauterives. Jean Carzou also attended his studio at the Grande Chaumière.
