MAZILU Georges
Georges Mazilu was born on 8 January 1951 in Romania. Lives and currently works at PARIS. Since 1978, it has participated in the main exhibitions of contemporary art in Paris and in personal and collective exhibitions in France and abroad. "Georges Mazilu likes to describe his artistic approach in existential terms. Without elaborate foreplay, he starts working directly on a block of drawing paper or on a canvas, a shaved table that opens his imagination, before arriving at his unreal gnomes and their mysterious and irresistible rituals. Mazilu's paradoxical creatures are almost invariably mutilated and partly human as if they had survived some genetic disaster. Essentially, they are engaged in moral and theatrical tales, obliquely represented by a pantomime of body language and delicate and attenuated gestures, which seem to be born of repressed memories of extreme experience and metamorphosis. His visual and enchanted dramas perversely defy the laws of nature and any reasonable expectation. They are populated by marginally human creatures that seem both familiar and entirely new, both friendly and in a way repugnant with their disfigured anatomy. They hit us and then calm us, while rejoicing the eye thanks to the skill of drawing and the refinement of the tones. His theatrical, action and non-action scenarios are expressed in a rather concise language of realism, and create variations on the web. almost infinite structural arrangements. Thus, Mazilu's paintings connect with power and vivacity purely formal concerns and the demands of an intense imaginary world that flirts with reality while challenging it."Sam Hunter.
