Roger Montané, the Great Simplifier of Landscapes

Roger Montané (1916-2002) was a French painter and lithographer, appointed official painter of the Navy in 1979. A great simplifier of landscapes, he captures only the essential masses of hills, trees, and shores, populating them with serene figures in a deliberately reduced color palette.

Official Painter of the Navy

Born in Bordeaux on February 21, 1916, Roger Montané created a figurative oeuvre of great unity. His paintings combine a foreground often inhabited by firmly grounded women and a mineral, almost architectural landscape. Nothing is more skillful than this apparent simplicity: the composition is rigorous, the color applied in broad planes, the light full and calm. The writer Armand Lanoux, from the Goncourt Academy, was one of his admirers and awarded him the Medal of Merit in 1982. He exhibited in major Parisian galleries and abroad, notably at the Maison de la pensée française in Paris in 1961.
