Biography of George Braque

Born in Argenteuil in 1882, George Braque was a multi-talented artist. A sculptor, painter, and engraver, he was one of the founders of Cubism along with the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso. He also co-invented, with Picasso, the technique of papier collé, artworks that include a collage of paper pieces and two-dimensional material elements (paint, gouache). His most renowned works are the series of Birds exhibited at the Louvre, created in 1952 and 1953.

History of George Braque

Son of a painter-decorator, George Braque created his first drawings in high school. He later joined Courchet's class at the Higher School of Art in Le Havre. Moving to Paris in 1900, he obtained his diploma as a painter-decorator from the municipal school of Batignolles. Upon returning from his military service a year later, he decided to pursue a career in painting. Initially part of the Fauvism movement, he embraced Cubism in 1907 with his landscapes of l'Estaque. In 1961, he became the first artist to be exhibited at the Louvre during his lifetime.
