Biography of Claude Venard

Claude Venard, this French painter belonging to the post-Cubist movement, was born on 21 March 1913 in Paris and died on 30 December 1999 in Sanary-sur-Mer.

History of Claude Venard

From his teens, Claude Venard decided to be a painter. Having fled after 48 hours from the School of Fine Arts, he spent six years at the School of Applied Arts. After some disappointments, he forged his artistic education as a painting restaurant with a master restorer at the Louvre Museum.

Claude Venard decided in 1936 to participate in a group exhibition for an artistic movement derived from new forces (with Pierre Tal-Coat and André Marchand) and will appear in exhibitions devoted to modern art, throughout the world, especially in Paris.

Venard finally rebelled against them and forged his own post-cubist style using a coloured palette applied with a knife, creating a raw and visceral material of geometric aesthetics. Throughout the 1950s, his paintings became more abstract, as in Still Life.

His works can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, the Tate Gallery of London, the Met of New York and the Tokyo Museum.
