Biography of Franz Priking

Franz Priking (born 7 August 1929 in Mülheim, Germany, died 1979 in France) is a painter and lithographer known for his vibrant and structured compositions. Trained at the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1948 and at the Berlin Academy of Arts under the direction of Max Pechstein, he forged a personal style combining expressionist and cubist influences. As early as 1950, he moved to France, where he found an essential source of inspiration in the southern landscapes. He came across major figures of the time, including Pablo Picasso in Vallauris in 1952, and develops a singular pictorial language, characterized by marked black contours and intense colors.

Career and exhibitions

Throughout his career, Franz Priking has exhibited in France and internationally, participating in numerous collective and personal exhibitions. His works are now present in public and private collections, testifying to his lasting influence on art of the twentieth century. Its bold and structured style, sometimes reminiscent of that of Bernard Buffet orAndré Lhote, has earned him recognition among lovers of modern art and expressionist.

Style and influences

Priking's universe is rich in symbolism and bright colors. He is illustrated in particular through still life, rural life scenes and horses, a recurring theme in his work. His use of thick black contours and stylized shapes gives his paintings a unique expressive force, evoking the power of the trait of Fernand Léger or the chromatic richness of Marc Chagall. Inspired by Provence, he transcribes into his landscapes a dreamlike and poetic vision, where light and volumes take on a sculptural dimension.
