Marko Čelebonović, a Serbian Painter in Saint-Tropez

Marko Čelebonović, born in Belgrade on November 22, 1902, and deceased in Saint-Tropez in 1986, is one of the most important Serbian painters of the 20th century. Throughout his life, he divided his time between Yugoslavia and France, where he found his chosen land in Saint-Tropez.

A European Education

The First World War led his family to Thessaloniki, then to Switzerland, where he completed his secondary education. He then studied political economy at Oxford, followed by law in Paris. In 1922, he joined the Grande Chaumière in Antoine Bourdelle's studio to devote himself to sculpture, before choosing painting in the summer of 1923. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Tuileries in 1925 and acquired a property in Saint-Tropez the same year.

Between France and Yugoslavia

Friend of Paul Signac, Albert Marquet, André Dunoyer de Segonzac, and Kostia Terechkovitch, Čelebonović remained deeply attached to his country. He joined the Group of Twelve in 1938, visited Serbian Orthodox monasteries, and painted the Montenegrin coast. A resistance fighter during World War II, he taught from 1948 to 1960 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, before settling permanently in Saint-Tropez. He was elected in 1968 as a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
