André Dunoyer de Segonzac, Painter and Engraver of Light

André Dunoyer de Segonzac, born in Boussy-Saint-Antoine on July 7, 1884, and died in Paris on September 17, 1974, was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. A student of Luc-Olivier Merson and later Jean-Paul Laurens, he attended the La Palette academy, where he befriended Luc-Albert Moreau and Jean-Louis Boussingault.

Saint-Tropez and Île-de-France

Exhibited from 1908 at the Salon d'Automne and the Indépendants, Segonzac discovered Saint-Tropez in a house rented from Paul Signac and returned there every summer until the end of his life. The rest of the year, he painted nomadically in the landscapes of Île-de-France and the Grand Morin Valley. A friend of Raoul Dufy, Maurice de Vlaminck, and André Derain, he achieved great success in America from 1928.

A Major Engraver

Segonzac is also one of the great engravers of the 20th century: his etchings, with a lively and luminous line, notably illustrate Virgil and Colette. A member of the Royal Academy of London in 1947, he was the subject of numerous exhibitions in Europe and the United States.
