Edgar Chahine, Engraver of the Belle Époque

Edgar Chahine (1874-1947) was a French painter and engraver of Armenian origin, born in Vienna and raised in Constantinople. Arriving in Paris in 1895, he studied at the Académie Julian and established himself in the early 20th century as one of the great engravers of the Belle Époque.

Paris and Venice

Chahine excelled in etching, drypoint, and aquatint. He captured with great sensitivity the street life of Paris: elegant passersby, small trades, and the poverty of the suburbs. His series dedicated to Venice and Italy are among his most sought-after works. He also illustrated numerous books and received a gold medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle.
