Biography of Victor Viko

Victor Viko, by his real name Victor Konsens, was a French painter born on 5 September 1915 in the 12th arrondissement of Paris and died on 8 December 1998 in the 4th arrondissement of the same city. Born into a Polish Jewish family, his father was a cabinetmaker. From a young age, Viko demonstrated remarkable artistic skills, winning in 1925 the first prize in the general competition of the city of Paris.

Career and exhibitions

After interrupting his studies at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts due to World War II, Viko resumed painting in 1945. His work was quickly recognized, winning the second Orion Prize in 1950. He participated in numerous collective exhibitions, including "Les peinteurs vous de son temps" at Palais Galliera in Paris in 1966, 1968 and 1973. His works were also presented at the Salon des artistes français in 1977 and at the Salon d'automne in 1987.

Style and influences

Initially influenced by miserabilism, Viko's work is characterized by ochre and grey tones, reflecting some austerity. This approach brings him closer to artists such as Bernard Buffet, Jean Jansem and Philippe Cara Costea. Subsequently, its palette is enriched with brighter colours, illustrating scenes of everyday life, including urban and port landscapes. His trips to Normandy, the Mediterranean coast, Spain, Portugal, North Africa, Italy and Greece also influence his subjects.

Works and distinctions

Viko illustrates in 1966 the book Who likes hervé Bazin. His works are part of public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts of Mulhouse and the Department of Prints and Photography of the Bibliothèque nationale de France. He received several awards, including the Eugène-Carrière Prize in 1961, the Populist Prize in 1965 and the Île-de-France Prize in the same year.
