In this lithography, entitled "The Church", made in 1970, Victor Viko gives a stripped but deeply evocative vision of a Byzantine religious building isolated in a Mediterranean landscape. Printed on vellum paper in 32 x 25 cm format, signed and dated in the board and then countersigned by hand, the work strikes by its graphic sobriety and the serenity it releases. The artist opts here for a monochrome range with warm sepia shades, giving the scene an almost mystical timelessness. The central dome and side domes, the bell tower barely sketched, the black and slender cypress on the left: everything helps to evoke the calm and permanence of the sacred places.
Viko highlights the solidity of the stone and the simplicity of architectural volumes, while suggesting the silent immensity of the surrounding landscape. The cloudless sky, the indistinct background and the absence of any human figure accentuate the contemplative dimension of the scene. It is not a question here of representing a specific place, but rather of remembering a collective memory, that of small churches nestled in the heart of the land, symbols of faith, recollection and history. This lithography, while in restraint, is a wonderful example of Viko's sensitive approach: between architect's drawing and poet's gaze, he captures the soul of the places with fairness and humility.
