Francis Smith, Portugal Dreamed from Paris
Francis Smith (1881-1961) was a Portuguese painter of English origin based in Paris, whose poetic and colorful work celebrated throughout his life the landscapes, festivities, and daily life of Portugal.
Festivities and Daily Life of Portugal
Born in Lisbon in 1881, Francisco Smith moved to Paris in 1907, where he married the sculptor Yvonne Mortier and adopted French nationality. He exhibited in Lisbon from 1911, then at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. Far from Portugal, he painted its memories: processions, markets, small squares, colorful houses, in simplified forms and a bright, luminous palette, with a sophisticated naivety. He died in Paris in 1961.
