Eduardo Chillida, Basque Sculptor of Space

Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002) was an internationally renowned Spanish sculptor and printmaker, born in San Sebastián, in the Basque Country. A promising goalkeeper in his youth, he abandoned professional football after an injury and pursued studies in architecture before dedicating himself to sculpture, where he became one of the major figures of the 20th century.

Fullness and Void

Chillida distinguished himself with sculptures, often monumental, in steel, iron, or stone, that engage with space and light. His work explores the tension between fullness and void, matter and air, in powerful and refined forms. This rigor is reflected in his drawings, engravings, and posters, with structured and minimalist compositions.

Recognition

Chillida exhibited in the world's leading museums, including MoMA in New York, Fondation Maeght in France, and Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid. His monumental sculptures are installed in public spaces in numerous countries.
