Biography of Antoni Clavé

Antoni Clavé, born on April 5, 1913 in Barcelona and died on August 31, 2005 in Saint-Tropez, was a Spanish painter, engraver, sculptor, and decorator who became a French citizen.

History of Antoni Clavé

Trained at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, Antoni Clavé developed a strong interest in drawing, engraving, and applied arts at an early age. After the Spanish Civil War, he went into exile in France in 1939. He settled in Paris, where he quickly became acquainted with avant-garde artistic circles. Clavé began as an illustrator and poster artist before devoting himself fully to painting and engraving.

From the 1950s onwards, Antoni Clavé developed a very personal visual language, blending figuration and abstraction, with a focus on material, textures, and graphic signs. His works, rich in collages and imprints, fluctuate between theatricality and silence, often populated by enigmatic characters, kings, warriors, or fleeting shadows. He demonstrated great skill in lithography, etching, aquatint, and mixed techniques, while also creating numerous book illustrations and theater sets.

His palette favors muted tones, with shades of earth, black, and gold, enhanced by strong contrasts and subtle plays of light. The pictorial gesture, material, and balance of forms play an essential role in his work.
