The trip of a lithograph of Henri Matisse: from the 125 gallery at the Museum of Modern Art of Paris
There are works that carry in them a particular story, not only by the hand that created them, but also by the places they cross and the eyes they encounter.
This year, one of the lithographs of the collection of the Gallery 125 has lived a real trip, leaving for a few months our collection to reach the walls of the Museum of Modern Art of Paris.
Last April we had the honor of lending this rare piece on request from the Museum of Modern Art of Paris for the exhibition "Matisse and Marguerite: the look of a father", devoted to the intimate and artistic relationship between Henri Matisse and his daughter Daisy.
A strong moment for us, impressed with emotion and pride, because this loan marked the meeting between our Gallery of Argyle in Moselle and one of the most emblematic places of modern art in France.
Lithography at the heart of Matisse's family history
This work has a singular story.
Executed in watercolor by Henri Matisse around 1915-1916, she was printed by Master Lithographer Mourlot in 1962, several years after the disappearance of the artist. This is a draft poster for an exhibition of the Gallery Jacques Dubourg, in which Henri Matisse chose to represent his daughter's face, Marguerite.
The portrait, simple and clean, is surrounded by a border of red and blue flowers, like a living and colorful box. This contrast between the delicacy of the drawing and the intensity of the decorative motifs reveals all the sensitivity of the artist and his deep attachment to his daughter.
Marguerite played a vital role in his father's life and career.
Muse, confidant, discreet but unwavering support, it has been present in the key moments of its creation. This lithography is much more than a displays : It's a silent tribute to this strong and indestructible bond between a father and daughter.
An exhibition that has affected thousands of visitors
Presented from April 4 to August 24, 2025, the exhibition of the Museum of Modern Art allowed thousands of visitors to discover a more intimate facet of Matisse.
Through portraits, drawings And archives, she tracked the artistic dialogue between the painter and Marguerite, offering a new look at the work of this master of modernity.
Our lithography was among the pieces highlighted, attracting the eye by the emotional force it releases and its direct link with the family history of the artist.
Knowing that it has been admired by such a general public, in such a prestigious place, was for us an unforgettable experience.
The return to the gallery 125
In this month of September 2025, lithography returned to Gallery 125.
After this beautiful trip, she found her place among our collections. But she is no longer quite the same: she now wears in her trace of this adventure, looks that have arisen on her, emotions she has attracted at the heart of the exhibition.
We are proud to have been able to contribute to this major cultural event, and happy to be able to share this work directly with our visitors.
We invite you to come and discover it at the Gallery 125, in Argancy, where it can be admired in a more intimate and privileged setting.
This is an opportunity to closely approach an exceptional room, a single moment in the history of art and in the life of a father and daughter.
And for those who could not go to Paris, we share some pictures of the exhibition here, to relive a little about this particular atmosphere and discover how our lithography has been highlighted at the heart of the course.
