Description
With Hat woman, Henri Matisse continues his sensitive exploration of the feminine figure, a central and recurring subject of his work, both muse and mirror of his constantly evolving style. This lithography, made after a work of 1935 and printed by Fernand Mourlot in 1939 for the famous magazine Verve, is part of a period when Matisse combines synthesis of shapes, radiance of colours and graphic modernity. The feminine face, stylized but soft, stands out boldly on a yellow background striated with black, evoking almost a theatre curtain or decorative frame. The wide white knot, the blue hat decorated with flowers and the carmine garment accentuate the tranquil elegance of this iconic portrait, both decorative and intimate.
In the history of modern art, Matisse's woman is never simply a model. It is a vector of style, a living form that the artist modulates to infinity, from the curve of his face to the flexibility of his gaze. This Hat woman, which probably evokes one of his muses, embodies this singular approach to the feminine: a synthesis of line, colour and feeling. The influence of cut papers is already palpable in this way of delimiting flats as collages, foreshadowing the great compositions of the end of his career.
