TOBIASSE Théo - Lithograph / Carborundum Engraving "Sarah" 105x72cm

In a bold contemporary style that embodies a historical and reverent appreciation, Theo Tobiasse has portrayed "Les Mères bibliques" (The Biblical Mothers). Each one stands out vigorously in her own dimension, yet all are linked by constant themes and symbols: love, the home, children, wandering and hope. They are mothers of the earth, of great stature, powerful in the love and support that enfold them.

Sarah is the first of the mothers to have joined her husband on their people's journey through time. She radiates a spirited quality, worthy of the laughing woman who gave birth to Isaac in her old age. She is truly a mother of Israel, bearing witness to sacrifice and sanctification.

The mutual love and devotion of husband and wife are captured in the figure of Rebecca. The home is the centre of their relationship. Isaac's love for Rebecca gave him strength and courage in the face of adversity. Her wisdom and determination suited her role in history.

Rachel, too, was loved for her beauty and her grace. Her steadfast devotion to Jacob was a love story that lasted her whole life. Wife, companion and lover, mother Rachel holds a special place in the history of the Jewish people.

Powerful in image, magnificent in their presence,
"Les Mères Bibliques"
is Theo Tobiasse's tribute to the ideal woman. The stability of the home, amid the endless wanderings of the people, is the creation of the Jewish woman. The companions of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were mothers of humanity, radiating comfort and happiness, strength and support for both their husband and their child.
